Ella’s café is situated near the top of Ecclesall Road, Sheffield. An ideal location for a real mix of people. The café has good reviews on TripAdvisor, so this seemed like an ideal place to take advantage of a Groupon deal. The Groupon deal was a cream tea for 4 for approximately £12, absolute bargain right? Maybe not after the experience…
The café was heaving on a Sunday afternoon. The café is split over two floors and is small but has a lovely atmosphere with a friendly welcome. After being seated, and we had booked, it was evident that there were no menus on the table and with no waitress coming to see us at all within the first 10-15 minutes, quite frustrating. The old ‘try to get their attention’ was in full swing but none of the staff were aware of our presence it seemed. After a lot of waiting, we at last had some service.
The order had some additional requests added on to the Groupon deal. This seemed to be very difficult for the waitress to understand but we finally arrived at an order! The food took its time to be served and when it did finally come, it came out in stages, so that one of our party was eating alone.
When the completed order eventually arrived, in about 6 parts with 2 different waitresses, the food was good. The scones were fluffy, fresh, warm and home made with lovely accompaniments of tasty jam and super naughty clotted cream. The food albeit tasty, was showcased in crockery that was entirely damaged. The tea pots, the plates, the little tubs for cream, all of them chipped in multiple places which is a harbouring site for germs.
Ella’s Café sells good food. And that is sadly just about where it ends. Would not be returning to this place unless there was a promise of new crockery and more attentive staff.
