A Sheffield theatre group has been left speechless after getting a good luck message from British musical theatre legend Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber just days before they perform one of his best-loved shows.
The composer recorded a special video message for the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar as they get ready to open the production at the Octagon Centre on Wednesday night.
“Hello everybody at the Splinters Theatre Group. I hope you have a great time doing Jesus Christ Superstar” he said.
“It’s an old show now so it needs guys like you who are young and thrusting and fit and exciting to bring a bit of magic to the old boy, so go for it!”
The huge production of Jesus Christ Superstar is being put on by Sheffield’s leading youth musical theatre group Splinters to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary.
The society, which usually welcomes performers aged 14 to 30, will invite members from years gone by back to the stage for the production at The University of Sheffield’s Octagon Centre.
The video from Lord Lloyd-Webber follows a good luck message from the lyricist of the show Sir Tim Rice, who tweeted his best wishes to the cast and crew last week.
Director of the show Ian Walker can’t believe it:
“To get a good luck message from Lord Lloyd-Webber is truly amazing” he said.
“The looks on our cast’s faces when they saw the video were something to behold and something I have never experienced in all my years involved in am dram.
“It has given us all a real buzz. We know we have a very special production on our hands.”
Jesus Christ Superstar runs at The Octagon from 3rd – 6th April. Tickets can be bought online at www.gigantic.com/jesus-christ-superstar-tickets or by calling 01142658688.
