Sheffield College performing arts students are staging a timeless and captivating musical as part of their degree course.
A cast of 11 students will perform Little Women – The Broadway Musical in the drama theatre at the College’s Hillsborough campus on Livesey Street.
The show is based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, which follows the adventures of Jo March and her three sisters during the American civil war.
Little Women explores the themes of personal discovery, heartache, hope and love and will be performed by Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre students.
Caroline Fojut, Performing Arts Lecturer, The Sheffield College, said: “Little Women is a timeless and captivating story that embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night of laughter and tears.”
She added: “It’s fantastic that all of our degree students have the opportunity to frequently perform in our purpose built theatre, which offers them valuable experience of professional working practices. I’m really proud of the professional attitude and skills they have developed, which will help them go further in their careers.”
Student Ashlea Screaton, 19, who is playing Jo March, said: “I’m really proud of the work we have all put into Little Women and I’m crossing my fingers for the show to go smoothly. As a result of the foundation degree and taking part in Little Women, I’ve developed my vocal range and understanding of my own voice. I’ve also become more physically fit as well as improved my dancing.”
Ashlea continued: “It’s a course that really rounds people off; no matter where you are the tutors find ways to help you develop your performance skills and confidence. I rang Hillsborough campus and the course sounded perfect so I just took a leap of faith. I have zero regrets. I’ve never felt so secure and supported in my training as an actress.”
She added: “My career ambition is to perform in big shot shows on London’s West End but I would also be perfectly content with teaching performing arts and sparking the passion for the art like my teacher did me with me.”
Little Women – The Broadway Musical is written by Allan Knee. The music is by Jason Howland and the lyrics are by Mindi Dickstein with performance materials supplied by Music Theatre International (Europe).
