Pensioner jailed for sexual offences against two children

Raymond Rider appeared before Sheffield Crown Court yesterday (Monday 18 March) for sentencing after admitting a catalogue of sexual offences against two young children.

Following a guilty plea earlier this month, Sheffield resident Rider has been jailed for almost 15 years for the string of sexual offences which took place over a 25 year period, up until 2012. His convictions include numerous counts of attempted rape of a child, sexual assault, indecent assault and indecency.

An investigation in to the 70-year-old was launched in October 2018 following a report to the police about his suspicious behaviour. This initial disclosure resulted in both victims, who cannot be named for legal reasons, coming forward and the police being able to build a strong case against Rider.

Investigating Officer, Detective Constable Mark Wilkinson said: “Above anything else, I’d like to thank the victims and their families for their bravery and for their support throughout this investigation. It’s down to their cooperation that we’ve been able to gather the evidence we have and make sure Rider no longer poses a risk to children.

“Rider’s subsequent guilty plea meant that he was quickly jailed and will now remain behind bars for a significant length of time.

“After an emotional day yesterday, I hope all those involved will now be able to get some closure and start to move forward from what has been a horrific time.

“Without someone speaking to us about Rider’s behaviour, the same outcome might not have been possible. Can I please remind the public that if you do have any concerns, or would like to report an incident, please call 101 or the national child sexual exploitation line, Say Something, on 116000.”

Rider was sentenced to 14 years and 9 months with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order also imposed by the judge.
