Sheffield City Council has approved a planning application from Placefirst, the award-winning build-to-rent developer, to transform a long-term vacant site into a new, purpose-built rental community of 113 family homes.
Under the proposals approved by the council’s planning committee, Placefirst plans to build a mix of three and four-bedroom family homes off Skye Edge Avenue. The site, located on a prominent position overlooking Sheffield city centre, had previously been awaiting redevelopment since 2006.
Skye Edge is located on the eastern edge of Sheffield city centre and has been vacant since a deck-access housing scheme built in the 1970s was demolished in 2006. Since then the site has been used as informal open space by the local community and, under the approved plans, Placefirst will retain a large area of open space complimented by a new children’s play area.
Placefirst aims to commence construction in May 2019, working with in-house contractor, Placefirst Construction. The first homes should be ready to welcome new families from April 2020, with show homes expected to be ready 2-3 months earlier. Full completion of Skye Edge is anticipated by December 2020.
David Smith-Milne, managing director of Placefirst, commented:
“Skye Edge will set a new benchmark in private renting for the families of Sheffield. Through our build-to-rent approach, not only will we create best-in-class homes, we will compliment those homes with professionally managed outdoor spaces where neighbours can socialise, and a community can flourish.
“More families are renting than ever before and the need for a reliable, quality offer has never been greater. Our homes offer a genuine, high-quality alternative for working families priced out of the housing market, or who prefer to the flexibility of renting.”
Skye Edge will be the first purpose-built BTR development from regeneration specialist Placefirst, a Manchester-based company that has successfully transformed several inner urban sites through innovative remodelling of existing properties including the multi award-winning Welsh Streets in Toxteth, Liverpool.
