Places still available for The Sheffield College open day

Sheffield College students focus on their studies at the new Millgate Cyber Security Academy.

An open day is being held at The Sheffield College next week for schools leavers and adult learners who want to go further in employment and their careers.

The College offers academic, vocational and professional qualifications including access courses, apprenticeships, diplomas, A Levels and degrees.

The open day takes place on Thursday, October 24th from 4pm to 7pm, at City, Hillsborough, Peaks and Olive Grove campuses, and places are still available.

Angela Foulkes, Chief Executive and Principal, The Sheffield College, said: “It’s a great time to join the College with the launch of our new employer skills academies, backed by an exciting range of courses and fantastic facilities that help our students go further in their careers.”

This academic term, 12 new employer skills academies have opened at the College covering sector specialisms such as catering, engineering, hospitality, and information technology – with more set to open in future.

Supported by leading businesses, the academies are equipping students with industry know-how, and the skills that employers need. Organisations involved include Discovery STEM, Liberty Speciality Steels, Millgate Ltd, MSK Ingredients, WANdisco Plc, PJ Taste, Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, Greene King and Kryolan.

Students are learning about all aspects of the businesses that are backing their academies, alongside completing a vocational qualification. The employers will also provide industry talks, workshops, work experience and placements to enhance students’ employability skills.

Student Ellie Turner, 17, has joined the Millgate Cyber Security Academy. She commented: “I find cyber security so interesting and it’s great that the employer is involved from the start of our studies as that will help us get professional experience.”

Student Nyacheng John, 17, has started at the Liberty Steel Female Engineering Academy. She said: “It feels absolutely great to be part of the academy. I am loving it so far! I chose engineering because it really is an interesting course to study.

Nyacheng added: “My dream is to go to university, progress into aerospace engineering and become a pilot. I am keen to break down barriers and show that women as well as men can succeed in the engineering industry.”

The College also offers a range of A level subjects including biology, business studies, chemistry, English language, English literature, film studies, fine art, geography, history, mathematics, media studies, photography, physics, psychology and sociology with all A Level programmes now based in new facilities at City Campus.

The Sheffield Sixth Form is a new, dedicated facility for A Level students at the College with its own common room. The move of provision to City Campus from Hillsborough Campus follows a consultation process last year with students, applicants, staff and members of the wider community.

Open day visitors will be able to meet teaching staff, speak to job experts, tour the multi million pound facilities and find out about courses, enrichment activities and additional support. Family and friends are welcome. All campuses have good public transport links.

Further open days take place on November 21st 2019 as well as January 28th 2020 and March 9th 2020. For more information, and to book your free place, visit http://www.sheffcol.ac.uk/open-days or call 0114 2602600.
