STOS Theatre Company announce new opening for Sunshine on Leith

THE sun hasn’t set on the 2020 production from STOS Theatre Company…it’s simply been delayed!

The acclaimed Sheffield community theatre group that brought such hits as White Christmas, Made in Dagenham and Shrek to the city had intended to stage Sunshine on Leith, the critically acclaimed and award-winning musical based around the hits of Scottish pop siblings The Proclaimers this November.

But as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the production team has decided not to go ahead with the show, which had been scheduled to open at the Lyceum in Sheffield on November 10.

Instead, the curtain will now rise on Sunshine on Leith in November 2022 – a full two years after the planned opening date.

And before that, in November 2021, the company will be presenting the regional premiere of Hollywood, Broadway and West End Christmas comedy hit Elf – The Musical!

“This has not been an easy decision for us to make but one we felt was best for the whole company and our audiences,” said STOS chairman Phil Brownhill.

“We would have been starting our rehearsals for Sunshine on Leith around now and that would have proved extremely difficult if we were to observe the social distancing needed to keep our cast safe.

“And as things stand at the moment, there is no saying when theatres will open and be functioning normally again, which would almost certainly have an enormous impact on ticket sales.

“With all this in mind, we have taken the decision not to press ahead with this year’s show.

“With Elf – The Musical booked for 2021 though and already generating an enormous amount of interest, we knew we had a big decision to make and we feel this is the right choice for the company.

“We are really excited that Sunshine on Leith with all its fantastic Proclaimers melodies will be now going ahead in November 2022 and we look forward to seeing everybody again at what promises to be another great show for all the family.

“Elf – The Musical and Sunshine of Leith represent the fantastic range of musical theatre and also demonstrate what a diverse and talented team we have at STOS.”
