Sheffield Wednesday romped home with a 4-0 victory over Leeds United to win the Youdan Trophy today (Monday, August 6th).
The jubilant Owls under 16s team enjoyed a 100% winning record across the tournament which has taken place over the past four days (Friday, August 3rd until Monday, August 6th).
City rivals the Blades didn’t go home empty handed – Sheffield United’s Frankie Maguire won the Youdan Trophy Player of the Tournament.
Seattle Sounders retained their title by winning the under 14s final against Charlton Athletic.
Teams were hand-picked to play in the Youdan Trophy tournament with many flying thousands of miles to compete in Sheffield, the home of football.
The Youdan Trophy takes its name from the man behind the game’s first interclub tournament that was played just once at Bramall Lane in 1867.
The Football Challenge Cup was sponsored by legendary local entrepreneur Thomas Youdan and won by Hallam FC.
The Youdan Trophy was started four years ago as a way of providing up-and-coming referees with top level match experience.
Youdan Trophy tournament director Jock Waugh said: “We really couldn’t have wished for a more exciting and professional tournament.
These teams have the pick of tournaments anywhere on the planet but they increasingly choose the Youdan Trophy here in Sheffield – it’s a great honour to know we’re becoming the place to see the game’s stars of the future.”
The Youdan Trophy is a unique showcase of the game’s very best new talent via its under 16s and under 14s competition. The tournament attracts scouts from some of the world’s top clubs.
Top class refereeing is an integral part of the event with officials flying in from around the globe.
Youdan Trophy 2018 was staged at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park.
