Westbourne pupils welcome the Chinese Year of the Rat

HOW do you say Happy New Year in Mandarin? Simply ask the children at Westbourne School.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at the Broomhill co-educational independent school celebrated the most important day in the Chinese calendar – the start of the Year of the Rat – with their own Chinese New Year Assembly.

As well as some fun facts surrounding the festivities, there was a special quiz which saw the winners receiving lucky Chinese red envelopes from headmaster John Hicks.

The assembly was led by Teaching Assistant Mingjie Johnson, a native Mandarin speaker who supports Westbourne’s Manadrain and Lorean speaking children and runs a Thursday lunchtime Chinese Club for all pupils.
